VARTIOSAARI (WUNNDERKAMMERNAUTICA) EPISODE #2 / 2024
Designed and curated by Torsten Zenas Burns / Helsinki, Finland.
Welcome to the 2nd edition of an annual curated catalogue that mirrors a living and breathing collection of speculative moments on an island called Vartiosaari.
This constellation of life and art practices has been collaboratively collected from the years 2023 – 2024. Within this manifested container we see seasonal landscapes, improvisational movement research, holistic clay workshops, science fiction video, ritualistic portraits, social scenes, family visitations, global exhibition dispatches, Helsinki film collectives, 2023 open studios documentation, reimagined allotment gardens, performances for the camera, and visual art projects created by existing Vartiosaari artist house members, local + international residency artists. Vartiosaari (Wunnderkammernautica) Episode #2 is printed with three unique covers created by: Alessandro Rolandi / Helena Aleksandrova / Torsten Zenas Burns.
Vartiosaari is an activated imagination generator and I hope you will have a chance to visit and collaborate with this special place in Helsinki, Finland. A special thanks to all the contributors, and guardians (past, present, future) protecting this sentient island.

The Bamboonaut clusters is a reimagined graphic novel.
A series of thirty two drawings that follows a bamboo entity and allies (both dead, alive and somewhere in-between) researching and manifesting tools from ecological fictions, sequential art history, architectural residue, speculative design, mushroom spores and experimental cinema all in the hopes of rewilding the planet. Each drawing is a proposed cover for a comic book series that only exists in one’s imagination.
Embedded collaboration 1:
Within the pages we also see bamboonauts guest artists visiting us from China, Italy, Finland and Czechia. Each of the shared projects explore electronic interspecies communication and environmental relationships.
Embedded collaboration 2:
